The Smooth Jazz Cruise 2010
Hit Every Right Note!
In the blink of any eye, seven wonderful days and seven magical nights took place on Holland America’s m/s Westerdam from January 17-24! From the moment that Cruise Host Dane Butcher introduced Marcus Miller, Dave Koz and Pat Prescott, to the final song by Ledisi, this cruise was one exciting and memorable event after another.
Getting the Party Started
The opening night shows featured both Jonathan Butler and Rick Braun, two very popular cruise veterans who really know how to get the party started! The next morning featured Jonathan in his memorable role as host of The Gospel Show. It was so inspirational as Jonathan dedicated the show to the life of Wayman Tisdale, the first of several tributes to our fallen leader. Later that day was the full-ship T-Shirt Party, enjoyed amidst the glorious sun and sea of the Caribbean. The evening shows featured four of the stars of the show … Euge Groove, Peter White, Jeff Golub and Special Events Host Gerald Albright. If that was not enough, the crowd roared to the late-night comedy of Alonzo Bodden and then headed to the pool and the Crow’s Nest for the Pajama Party! All of that in one day!
Autographs, Sizzling Shows and a Pool-Side Jam Session
Tuesday saw SJC ’10 dock in Ocho Rios for the day, but the real show would be on the ship where the autograph sessions began. Jeff Golub mixed his own Mojitos for those brave enough to imbibe, and the annual BBQ Under the Stars took place. The evening shows featured Groove and White again and the first shows of Earl Klugh and Richard Elliot. The late-night fare included Andre Delano, the very popular ukulele player Jake Shimabukuro, and piano bar performer Anita Rosamond. The evening culminated with one of the true highlights of the cruise, a pool-side jam session led by the one-and-only Marcus Miller.
Grand Cayman and a Poignant Tribute to Wayman Tisdale
SJC ’10 then headed to Grand Cayman for another day of fun and sun and, of course, another night of amazing music. After more autograph sessions, daiquiris with Eric Darius and another session of our talent show, the cruise took on a very reverent and inspirational turn as Marcus Miller hosted a tribute to Wayman Tisdale, titled “A Celebration of Life.” Every performer participated, led off by a guitar solo by Jonathan Butler that left no eye dry and ended with a rousing rendition of “Ain’t No Stoppin’ Us Now” performed by the entire lineup of stars. There was never a more poignant moment than when Regina Tisdale, Wayman’s widow, came on stage to thank everyone and express her feelings. A special thank you goes to Marcus, Music Director Brian Simpson and Dane Butcher for putting this amazing show together. “Unforgettable” is an overused term, but, in this instance, it truly applies.
Cozumel was then enjoyed by all, and the music continued with night shows by Jeff Golub, Gerald Albright, Earl Klugh and Richard Elliot. Special events included interviews by Pat Prescott, special seminars, exercise classes led by the Browns and a Motown jam by the pool, led by that fantastic party band, DW3.
Fun-Packed Friday … Wow!
Friday found SJC ’10 at sea and with a lineup of activities that was simply exhausting. Exciting, but exhausting! Autograph sessions, Bid Whist Card Party, Water Volleyball, Cooking with the Albrights, interviews and the finale of our talent show. But Friday afternoon was also the R’n’R Poolside Jam, probably the most attended event of the week, and Friday night was our formal night and shows by Keiko Matsui and Dave Koz, capped off by the now-legendary end-of-the-cruise “artist roast” by Alonzo Bodden!
Closing Night Rocked!
Our final full day was Saturday, when we all relaxed and enjoyed the sands, sun and sounds of Half Moon Cay. Then it was time for packing, but not before the closing night of music featuring Eric Darius and Ledisi. It was hard to believe that the crowd still had energy to rock, but these two young and exciting performers made the place rock and roll.
Saying goodbye was very difficult, but it was slightly easier knowing that just over 70% of the guests on SJC ’10 have already booked a cabin on SJC ’11. We cannot wait for that cruise to sail!!
A Big Thanks to All!
Jazz Cruises would like to express our deep appreciation to all of those who made SJC ’10 such a wonderful experience.
